Creating the chookhouse
With a new, large 'log cabin' type shed, the old 8x6 shed became redundant, so this seemed an excellent opportunity to create a chookhouse and have a few chickens. This actually turned out to be much more work than anticipated. We divided the shed to create a 1/3 storage area and 2/3 chook house, with a new door into the storage area and a new door through the dividing door. An original worktop was reused under the perch, duly 2" square wood with rounded off corners. Then the nest boxes were made - three. A new window was created. A pop hole, with a sliding door with cable to the outside of the run so it can be opened without entering the whole setup. Then we did the run made of wooden 4x2. braced with 4x2 across the top and then covered in chicken wire. All this took three full days, plus lots of evenings. We decided to use wood shaving, cos they look nice, but if they work out very pricey we may swap to straw. We also put bark chippings down in the run area, so hopefull it will stay dry, not turn into a mud bath. Then finally it was all ready.
